This last week, our group was together for the first time since swearing in. We had been at site for almost six months. The staff put together a four day long refresher course for the entire group. It was in Elbasan, at the hotel we were staying in. Our days were full of presentations, schedules and sitting in a classroom type environment. Boy, was that was a change from site. Not to mention, the hot showers, delicious restaurant food every night and we found BROWNIES!!
The night before language refresher, I visited my host family. On the way there I could feel some nerves creeping up. I found myself crossing all my fingers, in hopes that my shqip skills did okay. Turns out, I had nothing to worry about. Could I understand everything? No, but it was leaps and bounds better than when I was living with them. I thoroughly enjoy being a big sister to the girls in that family. My grandparents are also amazing people that I admire a great deal. I feel as though I am finally getting to know them. In PST there was a lot of laughing and nodding along. Now I can have some semblance of a conversation with them. It was a great feeling. Having breakfast with them was one of my favorite parts of the visit. Not to mention, the enormous bag of fruit, almonds and jar of jam they sent with me.
The actual classes were broken down by the amount of shqip spoken. There was a 50%, 70% and 90% group. I was placed in the 70% group and am very happy with how all the classes went. I can tell that I have improved quite a bit from PST and that was a relief. I am not grammatically correct when I speak but my vocab has increased. I am also able to understand and absorb a lot more of what is going on around me.
The second night we had a talent show for our group. There were quite a few people that participated and was a huge success. It was the perfect way to celebrate being back together and some great entertainment!
And of course, there were great audience members. We had survived language refresher, there was plenty to smile about!
