Change can be Good

This last weekend we celebrated my site-mates birthday. Some fellow PCV’s came down to Permet and stayed the weekend. Friday we went out for supper and proceeded to dance the night away at one of the clubs here. Yes, you heard right, a  nightclub in Permet. By Albanian standards this means strobe lights, blaring music, lights dimmed so you can barely see and plenty of cigarette smoke. Saturday we spent the day laying outside soaking up some sun. When you put a bunch of PCV’s together, odd topics come up. Everything from how dangerous hippos are to what Mermaids eat was discussed. Like I said, weird topics. Nonetheless, a great way to spend a Saturday.

Permet held a mini celebration for one of the Albanian holidays in the center of town. Most of these kids could have out-danced me in a heart beat!

It has started to rain on the regular. When that happens, my power is sure to go out. That damp cold is starting to creep up a little faster than I would like. I am not proud to say I did jumping jacks before I showered a few days ago. It may be a good preview of what’s to come this winter. Luckily, my favorite cafe in town got their wood stove up and running. I have a feeling I will be spending a good majority of the colder months, curled up on this couch!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This gave us a great opportunity to educate the community of Permet about this issue and the importance of catching the disease early. We spent the first half of this week walking around town doing just that.

Balloons!

Balloons!

I was designated balloon carrier. My coworker made sure I had these balloons attached to my hip for over two hours. If you don't think American's get stared at enough, add some pink balloons and you are all set! At least we got people's attention!

This weekend I am heading to Tirana to help out with a Special Olympics event. I am looking forward to being in the capital and having the opportunity to help out with such a good cause. In November, my dad is coming to visit Albania for a few days. Then we are heading to Italy for a week. Words cannot describe how excited I am for that. For Christmas, one of my best friends from America is flying over to Europe. Looks like I will be spending Thanksgiving in Italy, Christmas and New Years in Vienna, Budapest and Prague. If someone would have told me this a year ago, I would have told them they were nuts, and where can I sign up?! Not to mention, the fact that I am living in Albania, just a few hour flight from all of these countries. Sometimes change can be good. In the very least, it keeps things interesting and makes for some amazing holidays!

And now time for my week in pictures…

Not a goat here though, since I would end up on a butcher block.

Serious question; do you have friends at site?
