The fifth week of PST we are in charge of teaching two classes in the villages we are living in. My group chose to teach kindergarten and 10th grade and it turned out to be a lot of fun. We had translators to help with the language barrier and prepared a variety of games and activities on the topics the teachers chose.
We taught the kindergarten class a few different topics. The first of which was the head, shoulders, knees and toes song in shqip.
We also talked to them about why you should throw trash into the garbage bins and not the river.
The last topic we talked about was what germs were, how they were transmitted and how to get rid of germs.
For the 10th grade class we educated them about safe sex and STI’s.
The eagerness to work with us and show of their English skills was a lot of fun to see out of the older class. They were so appreciative of being able to work with us and talk about a subject that is considered taboo a lot of the time. Being able to interact with the youth in Pajove has been a great highlight of PST thus far.
We are officially halfway through PST after finishing practicum!! Next week, week 6, we have our health fair that we put on in Pajove as well. Week 7 is a normal week full of language classes. Week 8 we go to Tirana and meet our counterparts and then get to visit our future sites for the first time!! Week 9 is the language assessment and test we have to pass to get sworn in. Week 10 is the swearing-in ceremony and the official end of training! The next five weeks are going to fly by and I will be a volunteer living in Permet sooner than I realize!
