I am a big believer in celebrating birthdays to the max. Why not celebrate a day, or week as I like to do, that is dedicated to you. I happen to share my birthday with Punxsutawney Phil and his moment of glory. In reality Groundhogs day is a bit of an odd holiday and I may have a hard time explaining the point of it to Albanians.
Every year on this day a crowd of people gather to see Phil come out of his hole. If he sees his shadow he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole. If the day is cloudy and, hence, shadowless, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground. Of course, this year when I am leaving in the middle of our wonderful North Dakota winter, he predicted an early spring. Thanks Phil.
Nonetheless, I had a wonderful time celebrating my birthday this year by seeing family and friends. It is fun to imagine how I will be celebrating my next few birthdays in Alabania. I hope I can find/make a birthday cake, a true celebration just isn’t complete without a few sweets!
